Tribal museum


 Janjaatiya Sanghralaya or commonly known as Tribal Museum is the tourist attraction located on Shyamla Hills, situated in the northern region of Bhopal. Inaugurated by the 13th President of the Republic India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee. This fascinating museum covers around 7 acres of land.



The museum depicts historical and cultural narratives by portraying different facets of tribes inhabiting the state of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The mesmerizing museum has 6 Galleries, Open Air Theater and Chinhari, a retail outlet for handicraft . The division of 6 galleries is as follows:-


1. Cultural Diversity - It describes epic habitat of the 7 most important Tribes of state namely Gond, Bheel, Korku, Baiga, Sahariya, Kol and Bhariya. 


2. Tribal Life - It has the scaled model of the tribes houses made of mud, dung, bamboo, hay, dry foliage, etc. This gallery has food grains container made of earthenware, cart used for carrying things and charpoys used in tribal homes. The tribal house showcases that household things are kept in cavities made on it while the vacant space in between is used for moving in and out inside the houses. 


3. Tribal Art - It has red, black, green and white paintings using wall as the canvas. This gallery also have different traditions associated with  birth, wedding, festivals and death of these communities. The main attraction includes marriage canopy and Musical instruments like Dholak and Damru hung from a tree.


4. Tribal Mythology - ‘Devlok’ or 'the House of Gods' is one of the most captivating view of the gallery which consist of the different myths and beliefs associated with customs of worshipping mother earth by revering sky, land, animals, forests, fire and water.


5. Tribals of Chattisgarh -  This gallery magnetize by honoring the indigenous cultures of  the pottery art of native Tribes of Bastar region, Chhattisgarh.



6. Tribal Games - This gallery showcases the various games played by tribe children. Tribal Games is depicted with little sculptures of men, women and children playing games such as poshampa, chaupat, pitoo, stilt, tug of war etc.
